My life as an Intern: by Giles Mansell
When I look back over the last twelve months I can confidently say I have been luckier than the majority of my fellow graduates! Not because I kept a clean sheet at Manchester Utd’s training ground or spent the last three months on an anti knife crime/football project working with some of the biggest clubs in England, but because I have a job working in a field I enjoy! For most of my friends graduating now they will learn that the ‘outside world’ is a tough place for employment in their chosen fields; I was fortunate to be accepted onto the 10 week internship programme which helped me get to where I am now... still here!
It all started when I went on the Limelight Sports website late at night when the vacancy caught my attention. The only problem was the deadline for applying was at midnight that night! I decided to apply since I had previous experience from my part time job at Uni and enjoyed working at sports events. After a successful interview I was offered the intern position and received a voice message from my mother saying ‘a posh gent called Tim had rung to say your first project would be for Nike Football and Alex Ferguson!’. Nike Most Wanted was my first experience of the many exciting projects Limelight Sports is involved with. During the internship programme I was exposed to a wide range of areas of event management and was given areas to own and be responsible for from the start. This included working with the production team for Sky Sports London Freewheel, organising accreditation for over 600 staff and guests at the Nike+ Human Race at Wembley Stadium and working with the customer service team for Nike Most Wanted.
The internship was a hands on learning experience and on occasion when Plan A didn’t quite go as expected there was need for on-the-spot problem solving and pulling together as a team. A recent example of this was when the coach taking a team of 20 staff from Birmingham to London on a Sunday night did not turn up! I have learned many valuable lessons and also enhanced my office skills including administration, website writing and time management by working across multiple projects.
Based in Central London, Limelight Sports is involved in projects at some of the most iconic venues and cities across the UK. Whilst this industry will work you hard and not everyday is glamorous, working with Limelight Sports over the last 12 months has been great fun, especially as the team here are enthusiastic, motivated and supportive (not to mention sports mad!). There are not many offices that have their own lunchtime football team, a running club, and a netball team.
As well as the gaining a wide range of skills and discovering a vast amount about the events industry I have also made many friends in the last twelve months.
Since completing the internship I have worked on the following projects: London Winter of Sport ’08, Swimathon 2009, Kickz – It Doesnt Have To Happen, Bike Week, SkyRides and The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon.
