Play Sport London provides grant funding to sports clubs and organisations to enable them to provide free sporting activities across London, with the intention of encouraging greater participation in sport and physical activity. Play Sport London is part of the Mayor’s plan ‘A Sporting Future for London,’ a strategy that aims to get more people active in sport and coordinate the provision of grassroots sports in London during the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
In 2010 London Development Agency is working with Greater London Authority and other partners including Sport England, Pro-Active Partnerships, London Sports Forum for Disabled People, Youth Sport Trust and National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver this Mayoral programme.
Approach
Limelight Sports’ role as the LDA’s appointed managing agent for the programme is to oversee a number of the processes involved in the organisation of Play Sport London 2010. This includes the development, provision and management of an online application system and support for activity organisers, including the provision of a dedicated administration team to deal with delivery enquiries.
Limelight Sports is also responsible for managing the supply and distribution of promotional and support materials to activity managers. As part of Limelight Sports management contract, it successfully supported the programme ensuring all activities were delivered to the appropriate standard.
Outcome
Play Sport London 2009 fulfilled its primary aim of increasing sustained sports participation at a community and grassroots level in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It also achieved excellent levels of participation by females, Black Asian and Minority Ethnic participants and disabled participants, three key target groups for the programme.
In 2010 the programme will aim to improve on 2009’s achievements and the programme is on target to be a huge success this year.
