Sport Relief Super Cycle 2008
Overview
In keeping with the 2008 theme rise to the challenge, Limelight Sports was enlisted to design and plan an event that would enable Alan Shearer and Adrian Chiles to ride 335 miles from Newcastle to London safely and on schedule.
Approach
This Limelight Sports delivered event introduced us to a very different set of challenges. Usually our events involve celebrities, but rarely are they designed for them, indeed, our cycling events are more likely to cater for 2,000 rather than two!
The celebrity cyclists rode from Newcastle’s St James’ Park down to West Bromwich Albion’s The Hawthorns then on to London where they arrived on schedule for the live broadcast of The Sport Relief fundraising show.
The epic 2 day challenge required a route that would allow the team to cover 335 miles, whilst maintaining an average speed of 16.5mph on a total of just three hours sleep! Limelight co-ordinated the requirements for the five live broadcasts across the country and the event was continually monitored by the BBC Sport website so that their supporters could monitor their progress.
To ensure a safe passage Limelight designed the route and had to account for every eventuality, which included communicating with 14 separate police forces, establishing a centrally managed event control and sending out an event crew to support the entire expedition.
Outcome
The team arrived at Television Centre on schedule for the live broadcast of Sport Relief Fundraising show. The event enabled the pair to raise a whopping £394,383.
To date Sport Relief 2008 has raised over £26million for excellent causes in the UK and overseas, making it the most successful Sport Relief campaign ever!
