Overview
Move it at the Manor was an initiative by Smarter Travel Sutton, a partnership between Transport for London and Sutton Council. The event aimed to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging people to walk, cycle and use public transport and over 6,000 people enjoyed the borough’s first ever green travel festival.
All who attended were entertained by a variety of activities; including stunt bike displays, street performers, children’s game, arts and crafts, live bands and exhibitions - not to mention TV presenter Ben Fogle, who performed the official opening, signed autographs and chatted to visitors.
Objective
• Encourage people to use more sustainable forms of transportation
• Provide people with the opportunity to get active in their community
• Create a day of fun and entertainment
Approach
Limelight Sports were awarded the contract in May and were responsible for every aspect of the project from inception to completion. This involved devising the shape and design of the event creating a day of family fun and entertainment whilst maintaining the festival’s overriding environmental values. Limelight Sports carefully sourced, secured and managed the acts, performers and attractions that were all in keeping with the Smarter Travel Sutton message. The marketing also maintained this balance of fun and sustainability – Limelight devised and implemented an integrated campaign that targeted people through print, outdoor, radio and online channels.
Outcome
Over 6,000 people attended the action packed festival and the focus on healthy and green ways to travel was clearly communicated through a celebration of walking, cycling, and being active. Initially evaluation showed that the festival proved very effective in encouraging decreased car use. Among all frequent drivers, 9% said the Festival had impacted to a great extent on the likelihood that they will drive less over the next 12 months, whilst a further 21% felt that it had impacted to some extent. Among those who reported that they have reduced their driving or will consider it, these percentages rose to 18% and 39% respectively.
Transport for London hope to repeat the success of Move it at the Manor as they look to take the format to other London boroughs in a bid to reduce congestion and get London active.
